When Should You Schedule Your Child’s First Dental Visit?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling a child’s initial dental visit when the first tooth appears or before their first birthday. From then on, most children require twice-yearly dental exams and cleanings to maintain healthy smiles. Our team at Everlasting Dentistry strives to ensure every visit is comfortable and stress-free to help your little one develop positive associations with future dental care. We never spare any effort to ensure your child has an exceptional first dental visit. Positive early interactions with the dentist help build trust and set the stage for healthy, beautiful smiles that last a lifetime.
Children’s Dental Checkups & Cleanings

The checkup: Beginning to get regular dental checkups and cleanings is an important milestone in your child's dental journey. After greeting you and your little one, we perform a gentle dental exam to evaluate your child's teeth and gums and address any concerns. We believe in prevention and early intervention as the cornerstones of maintaining healthy smiles. During your child's dental exam, we carefully check for early signs of cavities, gum disease, or other oral health problems. Treating potential concerns in their earliest stages helps prevent them from progressing and needing extensive treatments down the road.
Review of checkup: After examining your child's oral health, we may recommend preventive treatments to lower the risk of dental problems. We may also discuss good at-home oral hygiene, smile-healthy nutrition, and oral habits, like thumb sucking and pacifier use.
Dental cleaning: During a professional cleaning, we gently remove plaque and tartar deposits from your little one's teeth and along the gumline, lowering the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. We also polish those tiny chompers with fun-flavored toothpaste, leaving them squeaky, clean, and bright. We love to teach our young patients about proper brushing and flossing techniques to ensure their smiles stay clean and healthy between visits.
Dental Sealants

Your child's permanent molars and premolars have grooves and crevices that trap plaque and food particles, making them more susceptible to decay. Dental sealants are thin coatings we apply to the chewing surfaces of those vulnerable teeth to smooth them out and protect them from cavity-causing bacteria. We typically recommend placing dental sealants as soon as your child's permanent molars emerge to keep them free from cavities right from the start.
Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride helps strengthen your child's teeth and lowers the risk of developing cavities. It can even help reverse early tooth decay by remineralizing the tooth enamel. We typically recommend fluoride foam application at the end of a professional cleaning appointment to protect your little one's smile.
Silver Diamine Fluoride Treatment

Silver diamine fluoride (or SDF) is an alternative treatment we use to arrest decay in some cases until a child is ready for a permanent restoration, or the treated tooth falls out naturally. It is non-invasive and can be applied quickly to the decayed parts of a tooth without the need for drilling or anesthesia. In certain cases, SDF is not a suitable choice due to the dark stains it leaves on the tooth. Our team is happy to recommend the ideal solution to address tooth decay, depending on your child’s needs.
Space Maintainers

If a child loses a baby tooth prematurely, the neighboring teeth may shift toward the gap, interfering with the adult teeth when they emerge. This can result in alignment issues requiring more extensive orthodontic treatment down the road. A space maintainer is a custom oral appliance that helps preserve the space left by a missing baby tooth, guiding the adult tooth to erupt in the correct position.
Caring for Your Child’s Smile At Home

It is important to maintain good oral hygiene, including brushing with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day. For children 0-3 years old, we generally recommend a smear of fluoride toothpaste no larger than a grain of rice. From ages 3-6, use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Our team is happy to demonstrate good oral hygiene habits for long-term healthy smiles.
